I am typing this message from the San Diego airport, waiting for my flight back to Canada. I have just spent a very interesting 3 days at the ASTD conference (American Society for Training and Development) held in the beautiful convention centre downtown San Diego. Although the weather turned bleak, the conference was anything but! There was an awesome display of exhibitors with exciting services and new innovations represented at every booth.

If you’ve ever exhibited at a conference, you know it means hard work, long days on your feet and a hoarse voice by the afternoon. Of course there is the other aspect of conference life, and that is the nightlife and entertainment. I had an opportunity to attend my first real live ball game (San Diego Padres v.Chicago Cubs) and also an evening at Sea World.

I've often wondered why most conferences have excellent entertainment packages built right into them, but I think I'm beginning to see why. You've probably heard the old saying "All work and no play makes Jack and dull boy". This holds true in every area of our lives and especially when it comes to training. When you design your training programs, build in a little entertainment either online or in the classroom - it's an effective way to lighten what could otherwise be a tedious training schedule.
